Maybe the movie that came closest to the spirit of underground comix was the x-rated animated Fritz the Cat. Based on Robert Crumb comic strip, Ralph Bakshi's movie stayed close to the source and seems to have hit a chord with viewers. Still today, nearly 40 years after its debut, the film is still the most successful independent animated movie in history.
