Gilbert Shelton is one of the leading members of the underground comix movement. In a way, this first sentence by itself may be controversial. Were underground comix artists a part of movement, or simply talented individuals who shared a disdain for hypocricy, after all? Still, Shelton and his contemporaries managed to lead art and to an extent, culture in general, in a certain direction, away from the mainstream, which probably is enough to render these artists as the leaders of an artistic movement.
Shelton is known mostly for his Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers comic books, but he is also known for other comic books, posters, and album covers.
